Forbes.com Ranks Colorado as the 4th-Best State for Business
Forbes.com Ranks Colorado as the “4th-Best State for Business”
Colorado climbed two notches on this year’s Forbes.com’s “best states for business.” States were judged on six criteria, including labor supply, business costs, regulatory environment, growth prospects, economic climate and quality of life, with business costs being the most important factor. Virginia, Washington State, and Utah were the only states ranked above Colorado.
This is good news for the Denver real estate market, which continues to recover from the economic downturn. As long as businesses can thrive in Colorado, its real estate market will eventually follow suit. The Denver and Colorado economies have withstood the national downtown quite well, due to a diverse base of industries. Colorado’s unemployment rate is well below the national one, and the Denver housing market is one of the fastest recovering markets in the entire country.

Colorado Unemployment Rate Drops in August
There is good news on the Colorado job front. The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment released its unemployment figures on Friday and the news is encouraging. The state’s jobless rate fell a half percentage point in August, to 7.3 percent. This is the lowest number since February and it contradicts the upward trend of national unemployment rate of 9.7 percent, which inched up last month.
The report also revealed that unemployment decreased in 62 of Colorado’s 64 counties in August. Many sectors even added jobs, including in government (no surprise here), leisure, hospitality, and “other services.”
While a 7.4 percent unemployment rate is hardly a positive piece of news, the underlying story is hopeful for the Denver real estate market, and for the entire state of Colorado. The magazine set out to determine which cities had the best ingredients to raise a child in, including a low crime rate, a strong school system, lots of other children to play with, expansive green spaces to play in, and plenty of family events to choose from.
According to the magazine, Denver was chosen based on this assessment: “Whether they prefer snowboarding in the Rocky Mountains, biking through America’s largest city park system, or heading over to Invesco Field at Mile High for a Broncos football game, Denver is a wonderful place to be a kid. Also among the country’s safest big cities, Denver has 300 days of annual sunshine, eight different professional sports franchises, and countless opportunities for fishing, white-water rafting, and horseback riding.”

Denver Tourism Faring Well in Economic Downturn
It’s summer in Colorful Colorado, which means it’s prime tourism season. According to Visit Denver, Denver tourism bucked a national decline tourism spending last year – Denver visitors spent a record $3.1 billion, which is a 9 percent increase from 2007.
While the number of overnight visitors was virtually unchanged from 2007 to 2008, the travelers spent more money. Where are these visitors coming from? California, Texas, and Florida residents make up the most Colorado tourists, so please, be nice to the Texans.
This trend isn’t surprising since Denver has so much to offer its visitors – the Cherry Creek mall, LoDo, the 16th Street Mall, are just a few of our city’s most-popular tourism spots.

Looking for some good news in this economy? Colorado continues to be a great place to do business. Forbes’ recently released its “Best Places for Business and Careers,” and it gives Colorado cities high marks. Five Colorado cities ranked among the top 40 of the largest 200 cities (with a population of more than 241,000). Cities were evaluated on 11 criterion, including the cost of doing business, the cost of living, job-growth trends, crime rates and cultural attributes.

This is great news for Colorado, since a strong business foundation is crucial to a quick recovery in the Denver real estate market.
