Denver Set to Shine for the DNC
Much Preparation has Gone into Getting Ready for Denver’s Guests
Since the long awaited DNC starts on Monday, Denver’s time to shine has finally arrived. Although Denver is gleaming this weekend, getting ready for the DNC has not been a simple task. Denver has been “cleaning house” for months to prepare for the expected 50,000 out of town guests. Regardless of your political affiliation, you must appreciate the positive changes that the DNC preparations will bring to the entire Denver metro area. The effects will likely resonate will resonate long after the last guest departs.
City Park’s Ferril Lake Fountain: City’s Park’s newly reconstructed Prismatic Electric Fountain was unveiled to an excited crowd last week. The $3 million project is historically symbolic, since the fountain dates back to the 1908 Democratic Convention, which was also held in Denver. The computerized, state-of the art will put on a different show every half hour from mid-May through September.
16th Street Mall: Since the 16th Street Mall will likely be a popular spot during the convention, much effort has gone into getting it ready. You can’t miss all of the flowers that have been planted. The Downtown Denver Business Improvement District (BID) invested a whopping $140,000 in 105 flower planters this summer. The 16th Street Mall has also gone “green” for the DNC. The 16th Street Mall Recycling initiative as spawned 10 new recycling bins placed all along the mall.
Art: Denver is making an effort to showcase its growing artistic identity. There will be numerous gallery shows and interesting art on display, including the statue of a yearling pony outside the public library.
This is by all means not an all-inclusive list of everything that Denver has done to prepare for the DNC. It may be worth venturing downtown to watch our great city sparkle in the national spotlight. If you notice something else that Denver has done to spiff up for the DNC, we would love for you to comment below.

Many Denver Communities Becoming Safer Places to Live
Crime Rates are Decreasing in Parts of Denver and Douglas County
Denver and many surrounding suburbs are becoming safer places to live. According to the 2006 Denver Neighborhood Crime Report, overall crime in the City of Denver declined 10% between 2005 and 2006. In addition, some of the Denver suburbs are seeing decreases in crime rates.
- Overall, there were approximately 46,000 reported crimes in Denver, which averages out to around 43 crimes per 1,000 residents.
- Bear Valley, Kennedy and Washington Park were among the Denver neighborhoods that saw the biggest decrease in crimes from 2005 to 2006. Washington Park saw a 31% decrease in crimes during the period including a 31 % decrease in the number of burglaries and auto thefts. A few Denver neighborhoods did not fare well in the report including Sun Valley, Five Points and City Park. These neighborhoods posted the largest crime rates per 1,000 residents in Denver.
- Douglas County continues to be a very safe place to live. YourHub.com reports that Douglas County saw a 14% decrease in violent crimes during the first half of 2007 compared to the same period last year. This conclusion is based on statistics from the Castle Rock Police, Lone Tree Police, Parker Police and the Douglas County Sheriff’s office. Both Castle Rock and Parker have seen slight reductions in violent crimes this year.
- In late 2005, the 12th Annual Safest Cities Award recognized Centennial, located in Arapahoe County, as the 25th safest American city.
Low crime rates mean only good things for the local real estate market. For more information on specific crime rates or other safety issues in your Denver area neighborhood, please contact TeamCox Realtors.

Denver’s Nationally-Acclaimed Park System Deserves Praise and Recognition
Don't Miss Denver's Wonderful Parks Including City Park and Washington Park
If you are looking to relocate to a city with a top-notch parks and recreation system, consider Denver, Colorado. Did you know that Denver has the largest park system in the United States? Denver’s nationally acclaimed park system and its commitment to preserving open space deserve praise and recognition. According to the City of Denver’s website, its vision is to, "to be a nationally recognized leader providing model programs and dynamic public spaces." Denver is doing a great job with its parks and recreation system that boosts over 4,000 acres of parks including natural space, trails, jogging paths, playgrounds, and much more. Two of TeamCox Realtors’ favorite parks in the Denver area include: City Park: City Park, the largest park in Denver, was originally modeled after New York’s Central Park. More recently, Mayor Hickenlooper and the City of Denver have made some wonderful improvements to it. In June, the Rocky Mountain News reported on the reopening of Ferril Lake after $28 million storm drain project. The project included the restoration of City Park’s century old fountain, which had been neglected for decades. The 2008 Democratic National Convention (to be held in Denver) was motivation for these improvements. Interestingly enough, the fountain was last renovated in preparation for the 1908 Democratic National Convention. It is wonderful that Denver is investing in this historic park for future generations to enjoy. Washington Park: Denver’s Washington Park is another favorite of TeamCox Realtors. It is also over 100 years old and features spectacular flower gardens and endless jogging trails, picnic areas and even a boathouse. The 100-acre Washington Park is simply charming at all times of the day with its extensive recreational offerings. It is a top destination to enjoy Colorado’s beautiful late summer and early fall weather. Click here to search for homes near City Park or Washington Park.
